Our Village Green Application - Tues 20th May 2008

Our Village Green application has been sent off to RMBC (the Registration officer is, funnily enough, also the Director of Planning!). Getting village green status would mean that no-one could EVER build on the land - we truly would have saved it for future generations.

We have been supported in our application by the Open Spaces Society, who help groups all over the country to protect their local green spaces and we're feeling confident, we know we've got a good case and lots of spirit and determination to keep on battling!

Young Resident on Dearne FM - Tues 20th May 2008

It was great to hear one of our younger residents on Dearne FM on Tuesday. The local radio station has been supportive since the start of our campaign and has asked us to keep in touch with any new developments. Fraser (11) talked to news reporter Juliette about how important the Green was as a safe place for local children to play and explore, and said that if the Green was taken away there would be darkness from the new buildings where there was now sunlight and green. He said, "It would be like they had taken part of us away."

A letter from Gladedale - Mon 19th May 2008

Councillor Gosling visited Manvers Green on Monday to drop off a copy of a letter he has received from the developers, in response to his own outlining our objections. Gladedale clearly think that the development is for our own good. Not only will they provide the 21 households of Cadman Street with 9 parking spaces, they also assure us that:

"...the positives far outweigh the negatives and new development would remove what is, in truth, a scruffy piece of scrubland."

Well, Gladedale, it's OUR scruffy piece of scrubland and it's your loss if you can't see its beauty. Your dismissal of what is precious to us has only strengthened our resolve I'm afraid!

Deer spotted on Manvers Green - Mon 12th May 2008

Early this morning a local resident spotted a deer on Manvers Green.

"I just saw a deer on the Green! If ever we needed a sign to tell us we were doing the right thing in trying to save this green space, then this surely must be it"

Lots of Press Coverage - Sat 10th May 2008

We've had some fantastic press coverage this week, as well as increasing support via this website and our Facebook campaign.

We were front page news in the Barnsley Chronicle (we're on their website too), and we got really positive write ups in the Rotherham Advertiser and the Doncaster Star, even a few words in the South Yorkshire Times. The photos are great, especially the kids, all at the front with their fantastic banners and pictures.  None of us could obey the photographers wish that we looked glum - we were having too good a time of it on the Green!

We're going to be famous! - Tues 6th May 2008

We began our press campaign today with kids' games on the Green - circus skills, brightly coloured butterflies and a nature trail. Photographers came from the Rotherham Star, the Dearne Valley Weekender and the Barnsley Chronicle and we're going to be on Dearne FM on Friday!

The children were fantastic with their banners and posters, you can see examples of these in our Gallery.
